A recipe about flavour, environment, and becoming who you want to be.
There are some dishes that don’t just fill your stomach — they teach you something along the way. This basa recipe is one of those for me.
I first learned about basa from my housemate. It’s a mild‑flavoured, white, flaky freshwater catfish that comes from Southeast Asia. At first glance, it looks like nothing special — simple, affordable, subtle. But that’s exactly what makes it fascinating.
Basa adapts.Whatever spices you introduce it to, it absorbs. Whatever environment you place it in, it transforms with it. And in that way, it quietly mirrors life.
Just like this fish, we often become shaped by what surrounds us. When you meet someone who seems exceptionally bright, disciplined, kind, or successful, it’s worth looking not only at who they are — but at the environment that helped nurture that. People who grow up around creativity tend to become creative. People raised around entrepreneurial thinking often learn to spot opportunity early.
Your environment whispers into you, daily. And over time, those whispers become habits — and eventually identity.
So the lesson? If you want to become a certain kind of person, place yourself among the people and environments that encourage that version of you. We really are, in many ways, the product of the five closest people we keep around us.
Now — onto the fish that taught me all this.
Basa Fish Skewers (with Tikka Masala Marinade)
Ingredients
Basa fillets (cut into chunks for skewers)
Ready-made curry paste or tikka masala paste
Fresh coriander (chopped)
Salt & black pepper
Garlic (crushed)
Ginger (grated)
Crispy onions (for garnish)
Skewers (wooden or metal)
Marinade
In a bowl, mix:
2–3 tbsp curry paste or tikka masala
Garlic
Ginger
Salt & black pepper
A handful of chopped coriander
Coat the basa pieces generously — it absorbs flavour beautifully.
Let it marinate for about 30 minutes.
Cooking
Thread the marinated basa pieces onto skewers.
Place them on a lined baking tray.
Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 10–15 minutes.
At the 10‑minute mark, turn the skewers so they cook evenly.
Basa cooks fast, so keep an eye on it.
Garnish & Serve
Sprinkle with fresh coriander leaves.
Add some crispy onions on top for texture.
The Takeaway
Basa isn’t the flashiest fish — but it’s adaptable, versatile, and open to transformation. And so are we.Change your surroundings, and you change your seasoning.Change your seasoning, and you change your story.
